I think all the mainline denominations are in danger of splintering. Of course, that has probably been true for a century. Some Methodists will likely need to find a new home, whether in a Methodist Mission or more likely in other, established churches. That is the cost of serious change in any church. Your denomination will just have to make a decision based on what they believe to be the Truth and then move forward.

The church is constituted by the missio Dei. The church exists for the sake of God's mission to the world through Jesus Christ by the power of the Spirit. I don't think this has mass appeal.

As a "moderate" in favor of a more inclusive stance, I wonder how a more "liberal" splinter group would fare and would I have a place at the table in such a church.

I think perhaps this is also reflective of the state of our media consumption culture. We gravitate towards the most outrageous and scandalous things, so hardly anyone writes stories about the vast majority of youth workers who make incredible differences in kids' lives.

Great question. I believe the Salvation Army has been in the news a few times in the past decade for not accepting a couple of large donations for lottery winners.

If a church would not accept a donation from a member's lottery winnings, then I would say it would be disingenuous to say, "well, we don't know who it came from so we'll keep it." Perhaps it would be appropriate to give the anonymous winnings to a ministry that helps people overcome addiction.

One way to approach it would be to consider another immoral means of gaining income, such as prostitution. I would think that in that case it would be quite appropriate for a ministry to give that money to a ministry that helps men and women escape prostitution.
