fly a kite to your death
in the category of "so weird no one could even make this up" there is breaking news of 11 deaths and 100 injurys at a kite flying festival in Pakistan.
The deaths and injuries were caused by stray bullets, sharpened kite-strings, electrocution and people falling off rooftops yesterday at the conclusion of the two-day Basant festival, said Ruqia Bano, spokeswoman for emergency service in the city of Lahore.
The festival is regularly marred by casualties caused by sharp kite strings or celebratory gunshots fired into the air.

Last year about this time- I read a book called the Kite Runner. I had never been aware that these kite festivals were a part of mid-eastern life. From what I understand the string is made of glass particles. The goal is to cut the others kites down with your kite's string. The last kite flying wins. It seems to always result in sliced, bloddy hands. I was amazed.
