binary is forever

Geekweddingband in the spirit of my recent marriage, man love tribute, and my over whelming geekness. i wish i had heard of the binary code ring for the marrying geek.

"Our computers, like our love, are built upon very simple foundations. In the case of computers, that foundation is binary code.

These sophisticated, yet simple rings bear your personalized message in that computer code.

this makes total sense, especially as erin calls my cute little laptop the third person in our relationship. would it be considered bad form to trade in the original bling within the first year? &:~)

igniting teens

just across the radar is that igniting ministries is putting a "teen welcoming" piece together. they are asking for youth group input along the way. they also have a myspace.

L_a25d7aed9a445eb21f6ec945fed0bcd9 Welcoming is how we show kindness, acceptance, and hospitality to everyone - guests and members alike. In a nation that's becoming more unchurched all the time, we need to ensure that teen seekers encounter in us a Christ that they want to know better.

The Youth Welcoming program has been designed to offer a teen-relevant United Methodist welcoming experience that, in context, shares the values, inclusiveness and living-embodiment of The United Methodist faith community, and actively invites seeker teens to journey into a relationship with Jesus Christ.

at the moment i am kinda confused by the whole set up as it is right now. when i read the myspace page it reflects a an odd third person writing. they are talking to teens on myspace, but they talk about teens with the same press release writing. i'd probably change that if it were me. i'd be interested to see the end result of this. welcoming is a culture change in hospitality, i am not sure how a book or series of videos changes that..

the lost tomb of jesus

Hs1584633_1 i caught on the news the upcoming debut "the lost tomb of jesus." seeing that this archaeological information has been around since the 80's, but people are only taking notice now. producing tv for it within these last two years tells me that someone is wanting to cash in on the davinci code phenom. still, it is here, what is a person to do?

luckily others are writing their formed thoughts brian russell has some quick thoughts, plus links to scott mcknight and ben witherington.

fly a kite to your death

in the category of "so weird no one could even make this up" there is breaking news of 11 deaths and 100 injurys at a kite flying festival in Pakistan.

The deaths and injuries were caused by stray bullets, sharpened kite-strings, electrocution and people falling off rooftops yesterday at the conclusion of the two-day Basant festival, said Ruqia Bano, spokeswoman for emergency service in the city of Lahore.

The festival is regularly marred by casualties caused by sharp kite strings or celebratory gunshots fired into the air.

i wonder what they would do if this guy showed up?

so i hang out on myspace

that interview i mentioned earlier this week is now the cover article on the umportal. it covers some of mine and jonathon's thoughts on how we use myspace in our youth ministries.

home alone & feeling grand

Cough_1 i've been laid out these last two days with an increasing cough. erin's been great, but she has also been at work and is currently off doing errands and some shopping for a family vacation we will be off for soon. it's allowed me to catch up on some movies and other random tv. the random tv isn't new, csi, law & order's, jericho started back, ncis, daily show & colbert report (unfortunately reruns). the movies though, that's big, erin and i haven't been good movie watchers as a couple. so for the last 48 hours i've watched

currently watching chronicles for the 2nd time. afterwards i think i'll move on to

hanging with methobloggers

today i spent a few hours of the day making revcamp ride with me. met up with jonathon and jay. we figured out a couple of things for two projects we are trying to get off the ground. good time had by all, unfortunately i am battling some exhaustion.

i took one picture with my cell phone. it stunk, so unless someone snuck a picture i think you will have to take our word for it that we hung out.

letters from church leavers

Lettersfromleavers
i am intrigued this evening reading these letters from people that have left church (www.lettersfromleavers.com). andrew brought light to this website over the weekend (i'm just now catching up). it is a sight devoted to helping people tell their story of why they left the Christian church.

it is not big news to know people are not flocking to the church. it is not big news to acknowledge that many folks are hurt from the church. i know we can't fathom why people get bent out of shape from doctrine issues, but they do. those are some of the many, common/usual, reasons people claim for needing out of the church. me, i find it sad reading some of the stories.

i find myself saying things like, "oh, poor you." "i wish someone to show you grace." "ew, that's bad." "i'd leave too."

After a couple of month of studying I went to my preacher and asked him to explain a few things. He said the same thing my parents told me when I was twelve. “You need to have faith.” This time I was not convinced.
...
I had the usual hurts perpetuated by church members, the “good” Christians..I was never good enough.  I had three “illegitimate” children, afterall.  No “good” man would ever want me.
...
As a christian I was frustrated with those other christians around me. They didn’t really understand what christianity was really about.  It’s more than going to church on sunday, bowing your head with the pastor prays, and clapping your hands when everyone else does.  It’s supposed to be a personal relationship with jesus christ.  So I left the church behind and went to discover this relationship on my own.

i don't know what to "do" with this. i know many of the folks, that i have read, claim logical processes for their decisions, so who am i to demean by saying their logic is ill or flawed. plus, i don't feel this is how one brings people to a relationship with Christ. i offer that we should read these stories, find a place of relationship with these people as there is someone amongst you that is that/this person. pray for that person that the Holy Spirit will move in them. pray that the Holy Spirit will move in you when a time comes to encounter this/that person and story.

new treats in east nashville

i'm super excited to find out that my friend jenny's new ice cream shoppe is opening on saturday. i just got this announcement via myspace. i know erin & i will be there at some point on saturday, and who knows how frequently we will be there. it could be our new east nashville meet up spot.

Time to make the ice cream....

Good news, friends and lovers of ice cream everywhere. The Pied Piper will be opening on Saturday, February 24, at 11:00am for her first day o' business.

We will be serving ice cream, soda, shakes, sundaes, even banana splits, so treat yourself while the weather is warm!

I've been making ice cream all week, and it's such a fun job. I think I was born for this. Forget American Idol, my destiny is Ice Cream Mogul (and you're welcome to call me that when you come to the store).

In the interest of information sharing and enticing you to the shop, I'll mention a few of the wonderful flavors...

I Can't Believe It's Not Butterfinger:

Okay, it is butterfinger. Lots of it. Suspended in the creamiest vanilla ice cream you've ever had occasion to deliver to your mouth.

It's Still Rocky Road to Me:

Um, yeah. It's Rocky Road. You can't have an ice cream shop without Rocky Road. It's an ice cream staple. Rich chocolate ice cream loaded with mini marshmallows and slivered almonds.

Cherry Springer:

This is just a working title. I thought it might effectively indicate that we don't take ourselves too seriously over here at Pied Piper. But then I got to thinking about this particular ice cream. See, it's an amaretto and cherry flavored ice cream that is packed to the gills with chopped dark chocolate covered cherries. It's decadent. It's kind of serious. And it deserves a far more distinguished name than Cherry Springer. Can anyone help? Cherry Lewis? Email me with suggestions, and if I use your name, you get a complimentary scoop.

The Movie Star:

Yummy lemon custard ice cream with a hint of Ginger. The Professor would choose this one over MaryAnn any day of the week. In fact, if they'd had this flavor on Gilligan's Island, they wouldn't have been trying to get back home. They would've been too busy eating ice cream.

Banana Fanna Fo Fudding:

Take sweet Cream Ice Cream with hints of vanilla, cinnamon, and nutmeg, cram it full of fresh bananas, swirl in a bunch of bite size vanilla wafers, freeze to perfection. Warning: This ice cream might cause swooning. It's that southern. It's that good.

Well, I'm off to make the ice cream.  Got to be ready for all of you eager ice cream eaters on Saturday.

a cool lent

468x60_lent

today is ash wednesday. many should know that already. for lent i'm hoping to do three things to hopefully deepen my faith practices.

i will be seeking to follow "a cool lent" by the friends at cool people care. the thought is that i will pay closer attention to the 5 minutes of caring and seek to enact the practices through lent, and hopefully beyond.

Secret for no other reason than, it's been on the shelf for awhile and i want to read it. i'm going to be reading mclaren's "the secret message of Jesus" as my lenten reading. i'm not sure what to expect from this, which, is probably a good thing.

third thing. i'm hoping to establish a practice of regular fasting. it's something i struggle with. partly because my life becomes very undisciplined on a regular basis, thus ruining any rhythm. i'm not quite sure how this practice will manifest itself. probably the wesley fast (thursday evening to friday afternoon, as i know it). we shall see.

look for me in print somewhere

Pen_paper i have been extremely worn out since ski trip this weekend. however, i did a couple of things that you can look for in print in the coming weeks. i was interviewed by robin @ the reporter about an article she is doing about online social networks and the church. talked about some of my views towards them and the things i, and others, are using them for in ministry. i don't know when that article will show up, but i will be sure to tell.

i also worked up a review article that ken asked me to do on "web empower your church" book. that review will go into next months circuit rider. before i submit it i must downsize it a bit. so look for that too.

the green church

i am excited to see this article (via: john @ methoblog) on a methodist church that is going green. green, as in being environment friendly. green technology generally has cost more on the front end of construction, but pays off in long run, not to mention the conscience of minimizing one's global impact. spiritually this could be considered a witness of sorts.

The $8 million Live Oak church will be Santa Cruz County's first to go “green,” including solar power panels disguised as roof tiles and skylights to let in the light. Construction could begin this summer with completion in a year.

“The building itself could be a witness to our values of sustainability and good resource management,” pastor Michael Love said, noting a self-sufficient church fits perfectly with the core values of the Methodist community.

“It's our responsibility to be stewards and caretakers of natural resources,” he said.

The 17th Avenue church will be home for three congregations that merged in May 2003, including the flock from the landmark Grace United Methodist church that was gutted by fire in 2000.

The church parking lot will be paved with an asphalt concrete that absorbs water, draining it into the ground below. Some of the stained-glass windows from the old church will be reused, and the furnaces will be higher efficiency.

wisdom from the desert

Desert1
Abbot Pastor said: If you have a chest full of clothing, and leave it for a long time, the clothing will rot inside it. It is the same with the thoughts in our heart. If we do not carry them out by physical action, after a long while they will spoil and turn bad.

end of an era

a friend of mine from umcom has asked very nicely for me to take down the claymation history of the methodist church video that i put on youtube a few months back. it is still in circulation and is copywrighted (not that that stops youtube videos). i honestly never thought it was still in circulation, but it is, so i will be bringing this down in a day or so. i am kinda sad, i know many people really enjoy finding the video on the net. plus i like the idea of positive and credible information on youtube. so i will greive and get over it. do, grab a copy of the video for yourself through the claim the name resources.

homer's odyssey

check out these 50 funniest quotes from homer simpson (grand that i am taking pleasure of the quotes of a cartoon character). some favorites might do well for church signs.

I'm having the best day of my life, and I owe it all to not going to Church!

I'm not a bad guy! I work hard, and I love my kids. So why should I spend half my Sunday hearing about how I'm going to Hell?

Kids, you tried your best and you failed miserably. The lesson is, never try.

Dear Lord.. The gods have been good to me. For the first time in my life, everything is absolutely perfect just the way it is. So here's the deal: You freeze everything the way it is, and I won't ask for anything more. If that is OK, please give me absolutely no sign. OK, deal.

i must have this

if you know me long enough, you know i must have one of these!

note: having stopped by the kohler display last week. i saw some cool stuff, but not this cool.

morning prayer

as i've chronicled before. i sometimes wake up singing a song. this morning seemed especially random as i haven't sung this song in quite a while.

O for a thousand tongues to sing
My great Redeemer’s praise,
The glories of my God and King,
The triumphs of His grace!

My gracious Master and my God,
Assist me to proclaim,
To spread through all the earth abroad
The honors of Thy name.

admittedly, i couldn't make it through the whole hymn as charles wesley would have required. i think i sang a praise song rendition that i have done with the old youth praise team. regardless, a good morning prayer

some emerging church

here's a news article on the emerging church done by 110 huntley street. interviewed is brian mclaren, donald miller, chris seay, and pernell goodyear. all the key words are said at some point during the news blurb "ancient church" "community" etc. still, it is a good briefer.

hard to be Christian in America

if you don't read steve manskar's blog you should. his latest post hits home with the richardson fam. we have been having a number of conversations on tithing to the church, financial stability for the future, our global impact, being missional as part of our life, and other items that our faith has shaped us towards. i'm glad to know that some of the people in the world that i don't know are praying for us, because they know it is hard be Christian in america.

After walking past many swanky restaurants, posh shops, and fancy townhouses, we started back to my car. During that walk back to my car, Tranquilino said something to me I'll never forget: "Esteban, after seeing all you have showed us today, I now know it must be very difficult to be a Christian in America. You, and your brothers and sisters, will be in our prayers."

This from a man who had been persecuted, whose sons had been kidnapped and killed (with bullets paid for by the US government), all because he insisted upon remaining true to Christ and to seek his way of love and peace. And he told me that it must be hard to be a Christian in America!

while i'm thinking of movies

Thesecondchance while i am in the mindset of movies (something that is very rare) i must recommend "the second chance" movie. i picked up the dvd recently on one of eric's recommendations a year plus back. i happened to watch it though a day or two later on starz channel. it is an excellent movie. it isn't the million dollar blockbuster, but a relevant message for today. so if you are like me, struggling with a life of mission while living in the world of suburban church niceties then this is affirming. if you are not and like your niceties then this should be convicting. if you are already doing the work, then just hope more people watch this movie and take notice.

if you need some other incentive. it was filmed in nashville, which is really cool! check it out, you won't be disappointed.

the full jesus camp

i hung out with my buddy jonathon today, but he failed to mention that jesus camp, the movie, was in full video on google videos. i like his humor with the film, i wish i could laugh at it as he can. give yourself time to watch, or watch incrementally, it is a movie.

update: so they took down the linked video sometime last night. bummer...

diana butler bass on anna nicole

as many of you all. i am captivated not by the death of anna nicole smith, but to the coverage her death has garnered. this reflection by diana butler bass i found to be particularly helpful in language and sentiment to a broken person.

Anna Nicole Smith’s life serves as a kind of reverse parable of baptism vows – what happens to a person with little respect or dignity. Indeed, she had become a cultural joke, the stripper turned gold-digger turned reality TV star. Estranged from her family, using her wits and her sexuality to survive, she turned the world’s lack of respect inward – creating a distinctly undignified persona as the pathway to riches and love.

But lack of respect does not create stable identity – as was obvious with Anna Nicole’s problems with illness, depression, and drugs. Both justice and peace proved elusive. In her final interview, she told the reporter that everyone she knew had “stolen a piece” of her. She died alone in a casino hotel, with her final taped conversation a tortured reflection of the confident sexual icon she attempted to be.

Christ's mission & sexual guilt

kara sent me (and others) this link. don't ask how she found it. she claims innocence. i'm perplexed by it and am wondering if anyone can help my failure inability to understand. is he loony or am i stupid?

In other words, what seemed so tragic to George Verwer—as it does to me—is that so many young people were being lost in the cause of Christ’s mission because they were not taught how to deal with the guilt of sexual failure.

Note carefully how I am saying it: They were not taught how to deal with the guilt of sexual failure. The problem is not just how to not to fail. The problem is how to deal with failure so that it doesn’t sweep you away into a whole life of wasted middle-class mediocrity with no impact for Christ.

i was confused after this.. after this i thought i got it.

The tragedy is that Satan uses the guilt of these failures to strip you of every radical dream you ever had, or might have,

that makes some sense to me.. but then this?

and in its place give you a happy, safe, secure, American life of superficial pleasures until you die in your lakeside rocking chair, wrinkled and useless, leaving a big fat inheritance to your middle-aged children to confirm them in their worldliness. That’s the main tragedy.

builders show is crazy

Dsc_4480 these last few days erin & i have been chilling out in orlando. it hasn't been the best experience. we pay quite a bit for the hotel (john calls it luxurious) and they charge for just about everything (i don't even want to get started on room service). however, it's been very cool to kick back with erin for a couple of days, we haven't had "us" time since new years. being that we are quality time peeps, this can be a problem. we've had some nice times relaxing and talking in between her work and my naps.

i got to hang with john this morning for a couple hours. that was a lot of fun and a new little cultural experience for me. had some very pleasant conversation and laughs. i didn't get to see the ill equipped asbury, but i figure i'll save that for another time.

Dsc_4481 Dsc_4483 this builder things has also been fun to hang with some friends from church. turns out some of the church folk are builders (which we knew) and were coming down as well (we didn't know). so it was fun to run into them & hang with them through the festivities and carnival that is "the international builders show."

i don't know how many people were here for the event, but i'd say it was somewhere around the hundreds of thousands of people. Dsc_4490we were told it's the biggest convention in orlando ever. all i know is that erin and i walked the maze of vendors for about two or three hours and we only touched a small portion of the event. i was hoping to take some cool pics and get some ideas for imagining some new prayer station installations. what i got was some cool advertising things, over the top stuff (kohler doing a cirque de soleil thing that apparently had a wardrobe malfunction the day before) and some indulgences of man-ness. i was pleased to see quite a bit of green technology being integrated into building practices, that is a cool thing.

prayer request

wondering if you all could keep my sister-in-law (courtney) and her father (bill). he's been diagnosed with stage 4 cancer and will go into surgery next week. you might remember that my sister-in-law lost her mother just four weeks ago, so this is a huge shock at such an already painful time.

teens coming out earlier

Lundinlarge with some of the later evening conversations i've been having this week. one happened around youth and their claims to homosexuality or bi-sexuality earlier & earlier. no one seemed to have a legitimate reason for this, except to say, it's more acceptable. so i was intrigued to read this latest piece from usa today (not to mention they always have the best looking, and usually skewed graphs) on youth coming out earlier.

Gay teenagers are "coming out" earlier than ever, and many feel better about themselves than earlier generations of gays, youth leaders and researchers say. The change is happening in the wake of opinion polls that show growing acceptance of gays, more supportive adults and positive gay role models in popular media.

i suppose there are more positive role models. i would not be able to name them (i could name shows & their characters, but those are not necessarily role models). john amaechi, whom i watch play basketball at penn state, has now come out as openly gay nba player. he could be a positive role model.

still youth face bullying, persecution, and fear. interesting enough, it isn't just "gay bashing" anymore.

The worst off, experts say, are young people in conservative rural regions and children whose parents cannot abide having gay offspring. Taunting at school is still common. Cyber-bullying is "the new big thing," says Laura Sorensen of Affirmations Lesbian and Gay Community Center in Ferndale, Mich. "Kids are getting hate mail and taunts on MySpace or Facebook."

this is not to be a theological breakdown case for or against homosexuality. i think we should all be able to agree though that youth (and adults alike) do not need to be persecuted or bashed as they sort through their lives. otherwise we stand to help our young people find worse ways to deal with themselves.

Researchers traditionally have emphasized that gay teens have worse mental health and higher suicide rates than straight teens. But Cornell's Savin-Williams says these conclusions are primarily based on small, older studies skewed to troubled youths. A few newer studies suggest teens who are attracted to both sexes may have the worst problems. But most research has grouped them with homosexuals.

Gay kids are more likely than straight teens to think about or try suicide, but there's no evidence they're more likely to kill themselves, says sociologist Stephen Russell of the University of Arizona. He has analyzed findings from a study of 12,000 teens followed up to a decade so far. Those with same-sex attractions are more depressed and anxious, Russell says, but there's also evidence that many who say they're attracted to others of their sex grow up to be heterosexual. He says stigma and prejudice still prompt undue stress for gay kids.

my week view on life

Dsc_4479 Dsc_4478 Dsc_4477as i mentioned. i'm hanging out in the land of orlando. so far we have been chilling out in the hotel as erin has been busy. since getting here on tuesday with her business stuff she's been pretty much on go mode, or nap mode at times. me, i have been toted around, helped out with nap mode, read a little but was mostly lost until i could get online and do some work. sidebar: why do all the expensive hotels charge 10-20 bucks for internet? rip-off!

we tried to do some sights and parks, however, i don't remember living the life around the magic kingdom being so expensive (which makes sense since the last time i was down here since '85). i wasn't a large financial contributor to our family back then.

amazed how much this life costs... oh, did i mention that i cannot leave the hotel now. apparently they tried to turn on the heat in the hotel. that hasn't happened in so long that the dust on the machine apparently blew through the system and set off some fire alarms.

in case you didn't know, fire alarms pick up the thick dust particles that smoke would generate. so this isn't uncommon. still i'm stuck on my floor till they get the systems reset.

prayerful blogging

stumbled upon this blog via the methoblog. i really liked this perspective on prayerful blogging. with this thoughr, i had to ask myself a question (i have asked numerous times). what am i learning from myself with this, or am i just filling space?

I find that to prayerfully blog or journal is to learn something about myself in the process. I think I am putting my thoughts out there, where? But if I am involved in the Divine Conversation while I am writing discovery happens. Sometimes the discovery is not so good. Sometimes, when I look in the mirror it isn't pretty either, but the One who is engaging me in this dialogue is so gentle that the soul surgery is seamless and the restoration amazing.

looking for a few good young adults

shameless plug to ask you all if you know of any young people who you would like to plug into a short-term missions experience role? part of my life is asking and i'd love to suggest it for those out there. mountain top was my first leap of faith into Christian leadership, it was big time for me. scared me to death as i was completely inadequate to lead yet God blessed my time then as he still is.

mountain top fell on some hard times, but has been rejuvenated with new leadership and a huge change of culture (for the better). they are in need of some new staff persons to fill out spots, which i couldn't recommend more. here's the down low

We still have about 7 spots to fill on summer staff, preferably with new people.  We have had an overwhelming response from our former staff members and at least half of the summer staff will be returning members!  We are seriously overjoyed and so thankful for this.  However, we need new servants to join the crew.

We are asking for your help.  Please talk with all the young adults you know that love God and love serving, whether or not they've been to MTOP.  Tell them we have open spots and would love for them to pursue the idea of serving with us for the summer.  You can give them an application (I've attached one), my email address or even give me their contact information and I will contact them myself.

if you are thinking of someone direct them to the ministry's website or have them email me.

early morning reflection

Nashvillehomeless so i have spent almost 28 hours straight at church. i'm a little delirious, but i am managing to get some things done before going home. one thing that i did was send out one of our weekly emails. i particularly liked the reflection moment i got into (and the grammar wasn't bad either considering). the reflection stems from our participation with "Room in the Inn" a local hospitality program for nashville's homeless. i started by thanking folks for their contributions and then it went like this.

... Things went smoothly and the fellas seemed to be very appreciative of all that we were able to help them out with. Do keep them and the approximate 2000 other homeless people in your prayers during this cooold coold season.
To help keep the need in perspective. One of the fellas told me last night that Room in the Inn only has available 120 beds on Sunday Nights, the Nashville Rescue Mission has only 678 beds. If you do the math, approximately 1202 people had to find alternatives last night. It was the coldest night of the year so far and might stay that way. It is any wonder that 49 homeless people died last year, either due to violent crime or succumbing to the weather. There are many things that lead to homelessness and I won't try to trivialize them with this email, but let us keep these folks close to us in prayer and support however we can find our ways.
On my personal note, I have found myself grip a time or two about when Room in the Inn falls. We have traditionally done it on Super Bowl Sundays. When I was at another church we hosted on Friday nights (a popular night for a 25 year old with no girlfriend and a nagging mother). I find comfort though that in this small act of sacrifice we are living out the gospel. Just read Luke 14: 12-14. As much as I'd like to go and hang with some friends and watch the game on some big screen tv without a care in the world, I (we) become more Christ like and "move on to perfection" by living out the gospel in this manner. I hope I (we) never loose site of that.
thanks for letting me share that

say hey to kamen for me
