looking for a summer intern

Gavin i am currently searching out for some candidates to help out as a summer intern with our youth ministry. if you know of a young adult who would be up for hanging out with us at hendersonville first umc i am interested in catching up with them. below is a little write up that has been in our church newsletter and will start circulating out and about after today.

The Youth Ministry Team of the FUMC of Hendersonville is seeking a dynamic and gifted young person to support our ministry of the church over the summer of 2008.

Ministry opportunities within the job will include mission trip experiences (jr high / sr high), the not so mystery mystery trip, choir tour, vacation bible school, leading weekly events, various office duties, and drinking coffee (or hip drink of choice) with the youth ministers of the church.

it goes on to say, email me if you know someone who may be interested. candidates do not need to be ministry candidate people or living in hendersonville. proximity is helpful, but we could work out housing details if needed.

for the interview process i would like a cover letter and resumes by March 9th. then the youth team that we pull together will choose folks for interviews (in person or by phone) and will choose whom they wish to hire for the summer intern position. compensation is, i think, $2500 for the summer which works out pretty well when many of your meals and travels are covered.

Visit our youth calendar for more info & dates on what is going down this summer.

hemeneutic quiz

i took this hemeneutics quiz thing. i scored out as a "progressive" with a total of 75. that is higher than dan kimball.. does that make me more emergent than him?

outsiders view of the united methodist church

i thought this was interesting.. views from the outside on the methodist church. some will make you scream, both in agreement and in disagreement. one thing, i'm not sure these folks are as smart as they think they are..

update: john has posted on this and has some good commenting as well

do you know darfur

a church member sent me an email correspondence of his. this lady was doing some asking about Darfur. he knew enough to know something. her response

At least you are aware. I asked three people today what was Darfur. One said a character in Star Wars. Another just said a character. Another said a character in the movie about Transformers.

If we wanted their oil, everyone would know about Darfur.

i like the idea of putting a transformers character with the name Darfur. however, the literal translation being "home of the fur" (a tribe of people) i suppose it would be one of the planets in star wars or maybe where we send all the transformers.

get educated on darfur. save darfur

techno youth pastor & the church : video channels

continuation in some of my on going thoughts on technology & church.. prior post linking content items & church website

it came up at our staff meeting on tuesday this great site in "surveymonkey." to this, the children's minister, our wellness minister, and myself said "duh, yall have never heard of that." we were then, in a humorous way chastised for not sharing this information sooner. so, when another question came up about how to educate our congregation on the happenings of the upcoming general conference and annual conference. the response was, we can do a newsletter article, maybe a press release type statement. i suggested this..

why not get a simple usb video camera, put them in the hands of the people there. ask some simple interviewing questions. have set up ahead of time a "channel" on youtube and you can upload directly to youtube and then send links out or embed the videos into the church website. it's all free, except the camera, but we already have one, so it kinda is free for us. to this we said.. "we can do that?"

so i did some prep work, here is what i've figured out. youtube has a great channel mechanism, is is your username at the end of youtube, super easy to remember. we are www.youtube.com/hfumc. to play with our "channel" i thought i'd upload our sermons. from what i remembered there was a 'director' setting that would give you abilities to longer than 10 minute videos.. what i've found, they still give director distinctions, but everything has to be less than 10 minutes. since no sermon is less than 10 minutes that, kinda sucks. so i split a sermon into 3 parts with some lead ins and outs for buffering issues or if someone jumped in on part 2 or 3. i used imovie to set up the movies and exported to cdrom size. the channel will still work for our purposes with the interview idea, but for sermons.. kinda stinks, or pees standing up.

another cool part of youtube is that they have a windows uploader that you can set up multiple videos to upload at a time. much like google uploader. so you can do your two or three videos, and then send them online overnight while asleep.

the thought then turned to godtube. surely with their basic premise of being for the christian faith they have to know that every preacher that films a sermon wants to put it online. sooo.. i find that they are developing a 'church channel' set up, but it isn't running yet. so, for now i set up the same username that i did on youtube. the cool part, they will allow you to upload a 30 minute video, but it has to be under 100mbs, which, can be tough on the quality. still, check out our psuedo channel at www.godtube.com/hfumc and you will find our sermon video isn't all that bad looking.

i trimmed it down using quicktime pro and exporting to a low broadband size. i probably could have snuck in a medium bandwidth file, but this worked.

i did upload videos onto google video, but if they have it, i have not been able to figure out if they have the same 'channel' set up. mostly they just let you search through the videos much like the web search engine. it'd be cool if google video did do the channel thing as they don't have video requirements of size or time. at least requirements that i have come to find. to test, i uploaded a mp4 file of a whole church service that was televised, which equaled out to about 1 gig, and it is out there to view.

what are the benefits of this?

  • just another place for your church to get exposure in search engines (especially if you are on youtube) which can be a good or bad thing i guess. &:~D
  • another way to revisit what one heard
  • a place to tell stories of your congregation
  • get people excited to see themselves on video (i know our bishop is stoked to show everyone he meets that he is on youtube)
  • one can embed video into their websites
  • you can make video announcements that people can visit more than once on sunday
  • people can show coworkers or reference sermon teachings in conversations
  • using the 'favorites' you can introduce other ideas and concepts to a receptive audience that you just don't have time to share otherwise

speaking of favorites, in plugging some into our godtube channel. i liked this video of a screening of an upcoming documentary. the questions asked, are great questions that those of us who rarely get out of the church circles need to know that people ask.

today started out with snow, but in true tennessee fashion, it is all pretty much gone now. still, it was enough to close all the schools and suspend church activities tonight, which i wasn't all that opposed too. i took some pictures this morning when it was all nice and pretty.

national eating disorder week

Nedawarenessdates thanks to the coolmomscare for the highlight of this week's awareness designation. gives me something to get up to date on.

i don't know about you, but this is all too prevalent in my life. from college until now. two of my youth girls have gone into the hospital for their eating disorder last fall ('06). one entered an intensive treatment facility because of it... and those are just the cases that are more public that i can elude to. but it isn't just a young girls thing. if anyone has seen "thin" (which i highly recommend) would know.

in this video you can see polly's struggles. as with anyone, this disorder is a constant struggle. it got the best of her and she recently committed suicide.

stan hauerwas is sorry to tell us youth ministers

this little snippet of stanley hauerwas, prominent theologian, speaking to the youth ministers at the princeton institute for youth ministry. with statements like..

  • How many of you worship in a church with an American flag?  I am sorry to tell you that your salvation is in doubt.

this is more of lobbing pop shots at the people who have little influence over things of this sort. however, i can appreciate the challenge presented in getting youth folks thinking of some of these things. too bad if they go home and tell parents this stuff they will be gone in a few months.

it's a birthday contest

the folks @ home ec 101 are celebrating one year and having a give away contest. all you need to do is leave a comment to enter. strange that i almost graduated from the home economics college at ua. but alas, we turned into human environmental sciences. so much more formal.

monday music : rem : supernatural superserious

i am making some decisions to cut out the talking in my life. getting rid of many podcast subscriptions, trimming the time i listen to talk or sports radio... after a few years of this stuff, i think i allowed myself to get drowned in just a lot of jabbering. so i've returned to some of my music roots and why not share. as dixon would say, "this my indie band that went mainstream. what am i to do with that?"

out of ideas : blogging projects to try out

chris brogan has a cool list of 20 projects to put together for your blog. the ones that i am going to entertain in the coming weeks.

  • My Town - Take us on a photo tour showing us 5-7 things that would make a new visitor to your town happy to see.
  • Share Five Friends- Show us five friends’ blogs and give us a blurb on why you like them.
  • My Mother, My Daughter - Doesn’t have to be exactly this, but the idea is to interview your parent and your child, and ask them five questions to compare their perspectives. (thinking i would do this with my youth)
  • My Media Making Process - Show us your podcasting or videoblogging or photoblogging (or whatever) setup, and talk us through the procedure.
  • A Cause to Connect - Share your social cause of choice, and give us a background, the challenge they face, and ways to connect and be helpful.
  • Without Words - Can you post a story told completely in pictures? How about sounds?

brilliant! what if we didn't have the laptop? what would starbucks do

by now you have seen the improveverywhere folks stoppage of time at grand central station. awesome! on a smaller scale, what would happen if we didn't have laptops? would people cart their desktop computers around to the local starbucks to work & surf the internet? what are peoples reactions? i think this is just a brilliant toy with a non hip cultural act in the hip cultural environment. brilliant!

i've posted pictures from the trip into this flickr set.

the killing of a young person

now this is just wrong.

a young student is killed because he was gay.

15-year-old Lawrence "Larry" King was shot in the head at the E.O. Green School in Oxnard, California, reportedly for being gay. He was in the eighth grade.

Three days after the shooting, on February 15, King was taken off life support and pronounced dead.

King's killer, 14-year-old Brandon McInerney, apparently targeted the student because he was openly gay and sometimes dressed in women's clothes. King also wore makeup and jewelry to class on occasion. It's possible that McInerney, who has been charged with murder and the commission of a hate crime, will be tried as an adult, which means he could face 50 years to life in prison if convicted.

now, there are many deaths of young people each week. all are tragic, but it seems especially senseless when surrounded in a hate crime. what upsets me most is that the fear that perpetuates a hate crime is manifested in such a young person. will we see more of this as youth come out at younger ages?

read more here , here, here you can also find some tribute videos

in a side thought: i wondered what godtube thought of "homosexuality" some interesting results, though not surprised.

the church & dealing with abuse

i've gotten involved in some conversations stirring around about after this recent article in the nashville scene. highlighting the abuse a  sbc pastor and a young lady.

The scourge of sex abuse within churches belonging to Nashville’s SBC has been well documented, though the denomination continues to ignore, and in some cases deny, the problem.

more was brought up with this blog posting on some reactions from the article.

The whole meeting was a lot of talk about why the SBC's hands are tied: polity, the autonomous nature of Southern Baptist churches, the potential legal ramifications of creating a database that fingers credibly accused sex offenders—most of which was covered in last week's story. Several on the committee even raised concerns about whether most Southern Baptist church officials were computer savvy enough to navigate an Internet database in the first place. One member said many of the denomination's constituents either don't have a computer or wouldn't know what to do with one if they did.
...
But the members of the committee certainly didn't shy away from expressing their distaste for the Scene cover story. And there was plenty of that to go around. More on that after the jump.

aunt b has thrown out her thoughts

the second reason is the reason that I imagine things will finally start to happen. Right now, because the Church has its head up its ass, there is no recourse for the innocent minister. If you’re accused of something, those rumors follow you around, because people don’t know for sure. If congregations can trust that, when an accusation is made, that the proper investigations are made and the truth discovered, then people who are falsely accused have protection and people who are properly accused meet justice.

i had made a statement that just about everyday in the youth ministry google news feed i get news of a youth minister who has committed some abuse. today, was sorta different.

now kat has thrown her thoughts into the ring

Churches are not public entities.  They are private entities entitled to privacy.

I know this sounds like I just love covering up for kiddie rapers, shorteyes, sleazy pastors and blackguards who profane the name of Christ.

everyone has valid thoughts, but is there a one "right" way to deal with & protect against clergy & christian leadership abuse?

update: glen posts thoughts about the poor reporting of the article. which, is valid. he also takes aim at the misrepresentation of the power/authority of the sbc. since i wrote a lengthy comment. i am sharing it here.

glen, you mention the state of the convention not having any real power over the individual congregations. now that may be true, but in the perception of the greater population that just isn’t true. it is the same as saying that Church of Christ is a denomination, people in the CoC will defend that there is not a denomination, but common’ you are. the convention might not have power, but that hasn’t stopped them from making proclamations for all their churches to live up too (boycotting disney comes to mind). just that sole act evokes the perception, which i was always told is 99% truth, that the sbc has controlling powers over their congregations. also the fact that there are other baptist churches that do not fit within the sbc reflect that there is some power that keeps out all that claim the baptist name.

maybe it’s poor reporting, but whether she said it this way or another. people are still going to read into it all that sbc has power or authority over it’s participating congregations and should make/take action.

i say this knowing too that my denomination works or believes in the power of the local church & we too collect together to support missions/education/etc. but when we have had issues you can bet that the whole church is affected.

the problem with the Lord's prayer

The problem with the Lord's Prayer is neither its content nor its historicity, but its familiarity. Many congregants don't actually think of the meaning of the words or, if they do, find only comfort rather than a challenge. Little children still happily conclude that the deity's name is "Harold" fear that the major sin they might commit is trespassing on someone else's lawn, adn earnestly hope that they are never led "into Penn Station." When placed in a first-century Jewish context, the prayer recovers numerous connotations that make it both more profound and more political. It fosters belief, promotes justice, consoles with future hope, and recognizes that the world is not always how we would want it.

how true.. and it made me giggle too

update: those crazy folks at church of the resurrection are talking up the Lord's Prayer as well.

my idea for general conference

i put into my write up as a general conference delegate. it is my hope for general conference.

A principle need of the church, as I see it, is to name and pull away from the practices that make the church "of the world." I share with our church that we are unique people joined together by Christ, and being unique we are not bound by labels and stigmas of liberal or conservative as the culture knows and reacts towards them. If we are able to break from this practice of placing each other then we are able to start to become the church and then start to examine and discuss the business and practices of the church.

too bad i missed out on getting elected so i can't live this out as a delegate, but maybe we can encourage other who are.

February 17, 2008

let the methodist games begin

just in time for general conference, our old friend dean is stirring the pot. seems the church is working around the discipline of the methodist church to offer a 'worship' service that recognizes homosexual unions.

my quick thoughts.. seems kind of like poor timing before general conference where the nature and writing of the letter could possibly be irrelevant. probably not, but it is possible. but maybe that is the point, to get this conversation towards the front end of everyones mind.

the things you find

Godman i am always amused at what shows up when i start looking for visuals and videos for youth gatherings. this week, i just knew i was in for a treat. the theme/title is "God Man" which is simply a short way of saying we are going to study Jesus, God made into man. that isn't fun. so searching "God man" over image search i found the adventures of "God Man" on richard dawkins website (prominent atheist for those who do not know). i think the comics are supposed to be slamming, i found them kinda funny.

i think the funniest thing though is "God man tv" which boasts an energy drink or the god boy comic books (note there is only god woman doll, which is pretty lame, sorry ladies you miss out on the "God man").

i am still recovering from being ill this week. mustered some strength & went over to hendersonville to watch the guys, and one girl, playing basketball. the first game of the season tourney. a number of our youth have never played formal ball (actually our girl is the only one who has played) a few have never played at all. so record wise, we don't do too well, but they play hard, have a good time and they were able to win a game this year. the hope was that they could get a win today and move further into the tournament. didn't get a win, but some good stories as kyle here got a busted nose while jumping around for a rebound.

it has been awhile since i intro'd a new blogger on ye' ole blog.

2258320290_81bc50d841 a number of years ago jonathon & i took a retreat down to Saint Bernard Abbey in cullman, alabama. there we met brother david. it was kinda odd finding such a young person in the monastery, but we got all jazz up talking websites, music, climbing & rappelling, and taking hikes through the woods. we have returned to the abbey a few times and hung with him again. the oddest thing was running into him randomly at opry land hotel in the late summer. he was there for the knights of columbus gathering and selling candles. now i see he has a flickr portfolio and is blogging as well, for the monastery of course.

so my illness has continued into today. it hoped to shake it yesterday, but we ended up having our wednesday night programming so i was at the church through the day. no rest, but we did have a small, but good podcast.

i went to the doctor today. got me a steroid shot, which i asked if they wanted to administer it baseball style or in my arm.. the needle was apparently long, so they opted for my hip. i did get a chuckle from the doc with my comment.

directions from there, rest, drink lots of fluids and stay away from people. so what is a blogger person to do while they are napping away the day and not hanging with people? upload pictures of course.

so i've been uploading pictures from last weekends retreat. i posted yesterday the videos that we had created from the retreat.

i started reading "the misunderstood jew : the church and the scandal of the Jewish Jesus" by aj levine, which, so far, i really like.
