hauerwas street cred : stan can't be that mean

i find this highly amusing from shaun groves in speaking to stan hauerwas's staunch pacifism. tony, you might like this too.

Stanley Hauerwas has said, “I’m a pacifist because I’m a violent son of a bitch.” And I don’t believe him.  Because he’s miniature.  He’s a diminutive (brilliant) theologian no more than five feet tall and speaking with a voice that reminds me of an LP played at a 45’s speed.  I’m not buying that he’s violent.  Not physically.  And that lets some of the credibility out of his entire pacifist position.

up and coming bloggers : teen style

anastasia at ypulse has garnered a list of up and coming superstar teen bloggers.

If you ask your average teenager if they have a "blog," he or she will probably just look at you funny. "Blog" tends to describe the act of writing and publishing online in a more formal way... For most teens, blogging is just writing in their MySpace journal or LiveJournal -- and is usually intended for a very small group of readers, i.e. their good friends. The writing is more informal and can include acronyms and emoticons and misspellings. It's often a continuation of a conversation that may have begun in class that day that includes photos from so and so's party.

thinking redesign : about that time

i am thinking a redesign is in order here. i can't remember how long i've used this look. but it seems like a good time to play around with some new looks & set ups. one should redesign their stuff with some regularity. i had planned on doing a new look at the beginning of the year, but was too busy. today is too nice to start now. so before i get going, do you have any suggestions?

southwest tweeting : doing customer service

so many of you know that i do the twitter thing now. well on saturday i wrote this.
Twit

i noticed today that i had this reply from, none other than southwestair.

Twit2

wasn't sure what they wanted to hear, so i told them the truth.

Twit3

so this is their response.

Twit4

i've been a fan of southwest for a long time. i love the hearding lines, the 24 hour check in that i always forget. mostly though, the cheaper prices and the fact that they try to have some fun doing those mundane tasks over the flight experience. never would i have imagined that i would be engaging in some customer service via twitter.. my how the world has changed.

you are nobody unless people talk about you : gossip girl blog

Gossipgirlimage

one the shows i've been getting interested in lately is gossip girl. since coming back on the scene with new episodes this new show, based off a series of books has some interesting hybrids and is meshing mainstream media with web2.0.

simple premise, think beverly hills 90210 characters move to upper east side new york, take on the charming care for human kind of cruel intentions, with the omnipotent narration of desperate housewives. mix in that, a blog. it could be a new favorite of mine.. when nothing else is on.

actually, i'm just intrigued how these characters are interlinked with a cyber media. with the target audience being teenagers i wonder what this might mean to the blog world. there are already enough gossip blogs, but when teens want to be somebody will similar blogs which talk of their happenings start popping up? as we know, it seems better these days to have people notice you with negatives rather than not be seen at all

virtual church planters : conversation of friends

Meeting_001had a random meet up with revmom & rabbit john in our 'second life.' it was some really great conversation time. we are continuing these talks of doing a virtual church plant. i made a visit over to lifechurc.tv's church plant in second life. even in cyberspace, it is a seeker sensitive looking space.

it was nice to pray for my friends and be prayed for. that was encouraging. so interesting is this connection.

Meeting_002 i zipped over to my basecamp the koinonia church. there i found some other folks checking out a brian mclaren video. but real world calls, i'm off to do those things. i only wish i could fly in first world, it would be sooo much cooler!

if you are there and want to catch up with me when i am actually on i am "gavin tellig."

ye blog in sermon : a blog first for me

pastor ken used my blog title for his sermon title this easter sunday. he had a lot of class to ask ahead of time, which i was glad to grant. he has now posted his sermon notes for reading.

Jesus was stubborn like Norman [you will have to read the illustration story]. He redefined what people thought they knew. In essence, Jesus would hit the back button so things could go forward. When others said Messiahs don’t hang out with sinners and that people don’t get healed on the Sabbath, Jesus was stubborn – THIS MESSIAH DOES! When others looked at the law and saw the letter, Jesus looked at it and saw the Spirit – the inspiration of His Father and what was intended. And when others saw death as final, Jesus was stubborn, and said, “Not anymore.”

    March 10, 2008

    surely you don't mean me?

Youthblog1 michael spencer @ internet monk has a fab post on why he doesn't read my blog.. this really hit home though michael.

    3. Your level of knowledge regarding the subjects you write about is so low that a discussion isn’t moved forward by what you write. This is why I don’t blog very much on baseball- which I love. I don’t know enough to make it worth someone’s time to read what I write. Many bloggers aspire to be pundits, theologians and culture commentators, but they simply haven’t done their homework. They don’t know the subject, they haven’t read the books. They don’t have a freshman major’s level of understanding. If you don’t believe me, read 95% of what’s written about philosophical topics like “postmodernism.” The blind leading the blind, to much applause. Unlike what appears to be the case with some famous bloggers, most bloggers don’t have a staff paid for by denominational funds to do their research.

Even though I am a seminary grad with post grad hours and extensive reading, and even though I teach Bible professionally, I know the difference between myself and Ben Witherington III, which some bloggers clearly do not. Reading some rookie blogger tear into a guy with three Ph.d’s is, at the least, unlikely to yield any real insights.

dang, i claim my stupidity, all the time. you should see the email exchange i had with dr. aj levine on a part in her book "the misunderstood jew." her response to my question, or maybe more a clarification..

    Thank you for your note.

I think the sentence to which you are referring is this:
" The occasional king who burns down a city or bridegroom who shuts the door in the face of five virgins who have run out of oil — that is, the parables in which the difficult readings cannot be swept away — tends not to get much sermon time, especially in liberal Christian settings. "
I'm sorry if I was unclear -- my pint is that is, parables of judgment tend not to be the focus of sermons in liberal settings, and by liberal I mean the type of church is which the focus is more on social justice, inclusivity, the condemnation of the ills of society, etc. (all splendid concerns, of course)  than on personal soteriology, divine judgment, eschatological punishment and reward, etc. (i.e.,  I am defining 'conservative' along the lines of Missouri Synod Lutheran, most of the leaders of the SBL, the PCA, Churches of Christ, etc., noting that there are exceptions to any label and that all generalities are inexact.
    Does this make sense?

    my response back

    thanks dr. levine,

that is the sentence and no need for apologies. i think being the decently read, but not formally schooled lay/staff person i get myself in places where i have to interpret to my capabilities and something of what i thought just didn't jive. so i asked

thanks for the clarification. it is certainly different from the assumptions i was coming too, so i am glad i asked and grateful for your time in responding. i cannot honestly say, "sure it all makes sense".. but let me consult my harvey's theological terms book to remind myself of the "big words" that, i know i know but could never tell you exactly what they mean. does that make sense?

    &:~D

    again, thanks for your time
    shalom

because she is cool like that!

    smiling back at you ...

and never hesitate to ask questions.

oh, sorry for the tangent. i'd agree with michael and it is okay dude, you don't need to read my blog. i might have started it actually shape other peoples thoughts but quickly realized that was stupid, so it is me being me and what God has shaped me into. i figure there are a few people out there that would care for that.
